Secrets of Dr.Z...

*** Don't go near a hospital in July or August. If you or a loved one are considering an elective or nonemergency procedure, you absolutely should stay clear of any medical facility with residents during the summer. Doctors in training, so-called residents, switch over every year on July 1. Everyone moves up a ladder. Senior residents are expected to supervise the juniors. Meanwhile, the "attendings" – the most experienced doctors at the hospital – are all taking vacations and couldn't be bothered. The new residents coming in can't find their way out of a paper bag and are scared to death.

The fact is medication errors are at their peak in July because of this turmoil. The problem is temporary. By September, the new docs have a few months of experience under their belts and the regulars are back at work supervising again... It's as safe as it gets by then.

*** People who sit more than half of the day are at a higher risk of having a heart attack. Sitting lowers your body's ability to metabolize fat in your blood.

Don't sit for more than an hour at a time. I get up almost every hour on the hour when flying. I also stop and walk around for 10 minutes every one to two hours of driving. I even get my water on a different floor while at work.

Sitting around doing nothing all day also disrupts your blood sugar regulation. Blood sugar has a major impact on overall health, including the health of your heart. One of the 12 most important things you can do for your health is movement.

*** Use lettuce instead of bread the next time you make a sandwich... Bread, especially white bread, is loaded with calories and sugar, but offers little nutritional benefit. Just use large romaine leaves as you would bread for a sandwich or tortillas for a wrap. This cuts down on calories and carbohydrates while still filling you up.

For example, wrap your chicken with romaine, and you get the added benefit of the romaine, which is packed with vitamins A and C. It also added a nice crunch.

*** People who get dental x-rays every year are at a higher risk of developing cancer. High levels of radiation at one body site can cause cancer in that area. If you are having specific health issues that require an x-ray, you should have it done. But otherwise, an annual x-ray isn't worth the risk.

About three years ago, this dental tech told me they needed a full set of x-rays because I was a new patient.  At the time, I protested, but was promised that the radiation was safe, that I get more radiation from the sun. SAY WHAT?????..I TOLD HER TO READ THE LITERATURE AND THAT LAST I HEARD DENTAL XRAYS DON'T PROVIDE VIT D!

I haven't had any issues with my teeth. A good dentist can find problems without needing annual x-rays.

*** Eating just four servings of broccoli a week can cut your risk of prostate cancer in half. A compound found in broccoli, isothiocyanate, can stop the cause of cancer and inflammation (which plays a role is several types of cancer). One cup of raw broccoli or one half cup of cooked is equal to one serving. You can steam the broccoli and add a little lemon juice and olive oil. Or whne I order chinese food I always gertmy  veggies steamed with none of the sauce.

*** Eating oysters lowers blood pressure. It turns out oysters are rich in magnesium and a second set of proteins called amino acids. The magnesium relaxes muscles that control blood vessels.

Interestingly, the amino acids are nearly identical to a popular drug already used to treat high blood pressure - Captopril. This drug inhibits a chemical produced by the lungs and kidneys, called ACE, that increases blood pressure.

*** Some people think Grape-Nuts is the world's greatest cereal. But here's something you might not know ... This cereal contains no grapes or nuts. If you've read the nutritional information on the box, you might have noticed it's actually made from baked wheat and shredded barley – also know as breadcrumbs!

Sounds healthy enough, right? But it's loaded with sodium – more than 15% of your daily value. It's also sprayed with a mixture of vitamins and minerals to make it "nutritious," like most boxed cereals.

Do what I do... when I have a craving for cereal I eat oatmeal (not microwave). Oatmeal is packed with fiber, and you can add fruit, like blueberries, so you'll know exactly what you're eating and you'll get the nutritional benefits in a natural way.

Rather than leave you with a cartoon, ponder this...

It was early morning, and two monks set out on their last day's journey back to their monastery.

At mid-morning they came upon a shallow river, and on the bank there stood a beautiful young maiden in a lovely silk kimono.

"May I help you cross?" asked the first Monk. "That way your garment won't get soiled."

"Why, yes, that would be most kind of you," replied the maiden, bowing politely.

So the first Monk hoisted the maiden on his back and carried her across the river. Once across, they bowed and went their separate ways.

A few minutes later, after the maiden was out of earshot, the second Monk said to the first Monk, "I can't believe you did that! I just can't believe it! We take vows of chastity, and you touched a woman. You even asked her! I know that touching a woman doesn't break our vow, but what's the Abbot to think? This is awful."

Several hours passed and the second Monk erupted again. "How could you do that? She didn't even ask. You offered! What are we going to tell the Abbot when we get home? He's going to ask how our journey was, and we can't lie. What are we going to say?"

By late afternoon the two were nearing their monastery, and the second Monk, now filled with anxiety, said, "I can't believe you did that! You touched a woman. You even carried her on your back. We must think of something to tell the Abbot. He's going to be so angry we'll be working in the onion garden for the rest of our lives."

The first Monk stopped, looked at the second Monk and said, " Listen, it's true that I carried that maiden across the river. But I left her at the river bank hours ago. You've been carrying her all day."

What have you been carrying that has weighed you down ?

Until next month..Be well!
